Size and design
How big should your greenhouse be? The larger the volume of the greenhouse the easier it is to regulate the environmental conditions inside the greenhouse by the more expensive it is to build and operate. The answer to this question really lies in the amounts and types of food you want to produce. The author of this site, wanted a small greenhouse to grow sufficient vegetables and fruit requiring hot to warm growing environment for two people, without becoming involved in their long term storage. The vegetables that prefer to grow in cooler environments were in cold frames or outside. The 100 square foot greenhouse meets these needs nicely.
We also wanted a greenhouse that would take little effort and cost to manage. We wanted a self-regulating system in terms of watering and heat management. The design we selected was a solar design with the glazing facing south, cross draft vents, a heat sink under the beds and an automated misting watering system to combine heat management with watering needs.
You need to consider such factors when you design your own greenhouse. back
